Nueva Std

So our first assignment in Typography was to make a poster to represent a font we picked. Basically it would be like an ad for that font. It had to contain the font name, the style (mine is modern and display for instance), some descriptive text, a list of 7-10 adjectives describing the font, and two large uppercase and lowercase letters, in 11x17 format. So we had quite a bit of stuff. Oh, also we had to add our name and class and semester (which I wouldn't have put on if it wasn't required), a set of 10 letters in lowercase, all caps, and lowercase italics. So yeah...quite a bit.
So as you can see I picked Nueva Standard. I really like this font. (Also, the project is over, but I'm in love with it so I've started another one on Garamond). Oh, we only had to do two, but obviously I had a fun time experimenting. And we could only use black, white, and two Pantone colors.

My favorite part of this one is the huge letters in the background. I wanted to create a pattern, but something that still vaguely resmebled letters. Originally the letters were white and all blended together. They lost their letter-ness (yeah I'm going with that) and so I switched them to different shades of grey. I also like how I stuck my name in there.

This is the second one I did and it's my favorite. I love the huge A and I love to do things full bleed and going off the page. Though I did originally have the body text going all along the right edge. My teacher suggested that it was too big, so I cut it down, but now there is kind of a hole that the eye is drawn to. Not sure how I feel about that, but this is still my favorite rendition.

This is actually just a second version of the picture below this. I was trying a solid background. It's ok. I don't think it's fantastic though.

This is the first version I did and I also really like it. My teacher said it's organized very nicely and he likes the texture of the background. That's what I was going for with the layers. I wanted it to be textured, but not too distracting. I have another version where there are more layers of the alphabet in the background, but I like this one better.

The class really like this one a lot. I like it a lot, but not as much as the first two designs I did.

So, I think this is something that I will continue to do in my free time. It's a good exercise in design. I don't really like having to add all the elements, but it's good practice because sometimes you just have to put a lot of info in a small space.
Our current project is to create a two page spread. I'm doing mine on Tips to Quit Smoking. We have to do one version with all text, and then another with at least three pictures. I have a version of the text only but I don't really like it. I need to go in a new direction. I'm stuck on this because it's even more text to handle and I'm trying to make it too much like a magazine article, when Krasner wants something more wild. But when I have acceptable versions, I'll post them.
