I made a very belated birthday cake for my friend Jon! It was my first time baking a cake (and making the frosting!) from scratch. I have to say, it came out awesome! It was also my first time cooking in the apartment. Our oven seems to be pretty spot on, temperature wise, and though the counter space is limited, I'm good at cleaning up after myself, so it wasn't really an issue.
I used a yellow cake and sort of mocha frosting recipie that I found on Smitten Kitchen, and it was very easy to follow. There are definitely other cakes on there that I want to try, but some can be complicated, and others require more tools that I don't have yet. This one worked well with my current budget.
The decorating didn't come out quite as I'd planned. I started later in the day than I wanted, and so I JUST finished the decorations right as Jon showed up at our place.
I'll actually be making it again on Tuesday for Timmy's birthday, but I think this time I'm going to try the cupcake version. Easier to distribute that way as well! (Hopefully I can decorate them a little more artfully.)
